11th Week of Pregnancy – Symptoms, Ultrasound

By surekha

You are now very close to completing the first trimester so the hormone levels would surge for the one last time before starting to fall considerably. As a result, the severe symptoms that you’ve been experiencing for the last few weeks would no longer be that severe. However, new symptoms might replace them.

When you are 11 weeks pregnant, your baby is as big as a lemon and is almost fully formed. From now on, the organs and bodily functions would just fine-tune further to ensure that the baby is fully grown and functional when it is time for the delivery. You might already have a bit of baby bump and the breasts might already be a size bigger. If you haven’t shopped for bigger clothes and bras already, this is the time to do so.

A lot of couples also start planning their babymoon in the 11th week. If you don’t know about it already, it is a type of honeymoon which the couple take generally during the second trimester to celebrate the pregnancy. As your energy levels would be higher in the second trimester, it can be excellent time to spend some time with your partner at a romantic getaway. Continue reading this post to know what else you should expect this week.

Baby’s Development in the 11th Week

By the time you are 11 weeks pregnant, you baby measures about 5cm from head to the bum and weighs around 8-9 grams. While this definitely doesn’t sound like much, you’d be amazed to know that something as little as what your baby currently is, already has a working heart, lungs, intestines, and joints. Just think of your baby to be a tiny version of what it’d be at the time of birth.

The fingers and toes have started getting separated from each other and now have tiny nails too. While the eyes are almost developed by now, the eyelids would remain closed around the 25th week. Even their kidneys have started working and are doing an excellent job of making urine. Gastric juices are being produced by the stomach and the baby is no longer dependent on the yolk sac for the nutrients as the other organs have now started working.

Bones that started to develop last week would now harden a little and the baby is already stretching and kicking. But as the baby is too small now, you won’t start feeling their movements. The ears have now moved very close to their actual place and would soon start hearing. The size of the head has reduced a little but it still makes up for most part of your baby’s entire body. The skin too is getting thicker and the facial features are developing pretty impressively.

Your baby’s liver is now mostly responsible for producing the red blood cells. However, by the time your baby is about 28-30 weeks, the bone marrow would be responsible for this function. Around the ending of the 11th week, the external genitals of your baby would have taken a permanent shape too.

Physical Changes in Women in the 11th Week

Most of the women generally start showing by the 11th week. However, if this is not your first pregnancy or if you are pregnant with twins, you would start showing sooner. As the morning sickness would start easing soon, you’d start feeling hungrier from the 11th week. If you haven’t started gaining weight by now, you’d do so from this week. Just make sure that you only eat healthy food without a lot of spices.

This is also the time when a lot of women start feeling more beautiful. The pregnancy glow like it is popularly known is due to the hormones in your body which start producing a higher amount of oil from the skin which gets on the skin itself to make your skin look shinier and healthier. A lot of women also experience improvement in the growth and looks of their hair.

However, as more oil is now being deposited on the skin, acne can be a problem for some women. Make sure that you consult your doctor before applying any cream as not every cream is safe during the pregnancy.
