2nd Week of Pregnancy : Signs & Tips

By Latheef Kasala

Isn’t it strange that you are entering the 2nd week of your pregnancy but the baby is not even present? It definitely is but your baby is not really conceived in the 2nd week. By the end of the 2nd week, ovulation will take place and it is only after the ovulation that the baby would be conceived.

The first major sign of being pregnant is missed period which generally happens in the 4th week of your pregnancy. It is only after missing the period that most women use a home pregnancy kit to confirm the pregnancy. So, even if you might experience some symptoms this week, you won’t really believe that they are due to pregnancy.

As for the development of the baby or physical changes in your body, nothing noteworthy would really be happening this week. But as this phase can be very exciting for women who were planning to get pregnant, it is important to know what might actually happen this week.

  • Twin Pregnancy
  • Pregnancy Test
  • Irregular Periods and Pregnancy

Development Of Baby in the 2nd Week of Pregnancy

While you might not know that you are pregnant, something major has already begun in your body. Around the 14th day of your menstrual cycle or the 2nd week of your pregnancy, ovulation occurs. It means that your ovaries release eggs for fertilization. The egg released by the ovaries reaches the fallopian tube and stay there for about 12-24 hours. This happens in every single of your menstrual cycle. The egg is just flushed out when the uterine lining sheds if there is no sperm in the fallopian tube for fertilization.

If you’ve had unprotected sex close to the ovulation and your partner ejaculated inside you, the sperm would also reach the fallopian tube. If there is sperm in your fallopian tube when the egg reaches there, it results in fertilization. Once the egg is fertilized, it is called a blastocyte which then starts moving towards the uterine wall for implantation.

However, in a lot of cases, the fertilization doesn’t really happen instantly. The sperm can remain in the fallopian tube for up to 6 days after having unprotected sex waiting for the egg. So, there can be a gap of 6 days from the day you had sex and when fertilization actually occurs. From fertilization to implantation, it’d take another couple of weeks.

Physical Changes in Women in 2nd Week of Pregnancy

There is a widespread belief among a lot of women that physical changes start appearing as soon as you get pregnant. But know that the growing belly, increasing weight, or the pregnancy glow are at least 7-8 weeks away. In the 2nd week of pregnancy, you might experience a few symptoms but apart from that don’t expect any physical change this week.

Signs of 2nd Week Pregnancy

Women experience a few signs when the sperm and egg have successfully fertilized. However, most of these symptoms are very minor and a lot of women confuse them with the symptoms of PMS. If you believe you are pregnant, these are a few symptoms that can confirm your pregnancy-

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Nausea
  • Tender breasts
  • Tiredness
  • Spotting
  • Morning sickness
  • Bloating
  • Frequent urination

Know that there is a possibility that you might be experiencing these symptoms and you might not really be pregnant as they might actually be due to PMS or some other problem. Similarly, if even if you are not experiencing these symptoms, you might still be pregnant.

Only a pregnancy test could confirm the pregnancy. If you want, there are now ovulation kits available in the market to confirm the ovulation. If the test result is positive, you might be pregnant.

Tips for 2nd Week Pregnancy

You can’t really do anything if you don’t even know that you are pregnant by the 2nd week. But if you have started experiencing these symptoms, it is time for you to start preparing your body and making adjustments to your life for the pregnancy.

  • Start consuming healthy food with a lot of green leafy vegetables
  • Stop consuming alcohol and smoking
  • Join a gym or Yoga class
  • Start planning the maternity leave if you are a working woman
  • You might use an ovulation kit to confirm the ovulation

It is better to start preparing yourself for the pregnancy as soon as possible. A lot of healthy habits might take time to get used to and thus, the sooner you’ll adopt them the more benefits they will provide during the pregnancy.

  • Discharge During Pregnancy
  • Vaginal Bleeding
  • Excessive Menstrual Bleeding

Conclusion

For most of the women, the 2nd week of pregnancy is generally filled with a lot of confusion and excitement as they are unable to confirm the pregnancy. Apart from the excitement, nothing major really happens this week to confirm whether or not you are pregnant. While there can be a few symptoms, there is a major possibility that you might not experience anything at all or just won’t give enough attention to these symptoms.

On the inside, a major development has already begun and you’d see the outcome of these developments in the following weeks. While the first trimester of pregnancy is known to be the most difficult, with the right knowledge, and support of your partner, family, and friends, you’d pass this phase without any major discomfort.

A whole new life is taking birth inside you and the whole process would definitely demand a lot from you on the physical as well as on the emotional and mental front. Just stay strong and start following the tips mentioned above to prepare yourself for what the following weeks have to offer.
