The term colitis is given to the condition of inflammation of large intestine or colon. This can happen due to ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s syndrome, food poisoning and lack of blood flow and trouble in bowel movements. Apart from these, there are several other reasons for developing swelling on the colon. Bacterial infection or fungal infection can collapse the colon causing inflammation and pain.
Some of the common symptoms of colitis are abdominal pain, fever, chills, bloating sensation or gas formation, passage of stool with irritation and bloody discharge from rectum and frequent urge to pass stool. To prevent this condition, it is essential to follow regular diet drinking plenty of fluids. Adding more fluids will give rest to the colon. Ensure that you are not dehydrating which would worsen the situation causing cramps and ulcers.
The doctor will first examine the person and verify how often it occurs and assess the intensity of pain and swelling of colon. He may ask you to undergo CT scan or MRI for abdomen and sometimes even a barium enema test is enough to judge the situation.
Treatment of colitis is to be given based on the factor that triggers inflammation. In case if there is swelling due to ulcer, then it will be treated. If it is due to lack of blood flow treatment will be initiated to set right the issue.
