Endoplasmic Reticulum

By surekha

Endoplasmic Reticulum shortly called as ER is the essential part of a cell. ER is closely associated with other organelles of the cell like ribosomes, DNA, RNA and golgi bodies. ER is responsible for creating network of membrane tissue covering the cell. It takes different shape in various cells depending on the function it performs.

Basically there are two types of endoplasmic reticulum namely rough and smooth. In the rough type, ER has plenty of ribosomes attached to it and it looks like bulging membranes, whereas smooth ER looks similar to flat balloon without any additional fittings. Smooth ER is responsible for storing function in the cell since it stores plenty of steroids and ions. The steroids are nothing but small organic molecule that serves many purpose of the cell. Whenever there is depletion of ion, the smooth ER releases the ion particles from the storehouse.

Rough endoplasmic reticulum is important for the collection of protein particles. Some parts of protein are used for the cell formation and the balance is sent out to the body. Whenever the ribosomes present in the ER gets filled up with amino acids which is a protein it squeezes off the vesicle which in turn will enter into the golgi bodies for later usage.
