Testicles are a pair of small pouch of skin known as scrotum or scrotal bags. They are male sex glands which are involved in the production of sperm and testosterone. Testicles are found behind the penis. Itching in the penis and scrotal areas is quite common for men. Many factors ranging from infection to sexually transmitted diseases can cause itchy testicles. Other common causes of testicle itching include scabies, Jock itch, allergic reaction and infection. Treatment is based on the causative factor and maintaining proper hygiene.
Itchy Testicles Symptoms :
There can be persistent itching and irritation of the testicles and penis. For some men it can cause burning sensation and pain in the private parts. It would be embarrassing for the person to scratch his genitals in public.
Itchy Testicles Causes :
Variety of factors can cause itchy testicles. Often it is the folded skin of the scrotum that causes itchy feeling. - Infection :
This is the most common reason for itchy testicles. Infection can occur in many ways and it can be of many types like bacterial infection or fungal infection. The region of scrotum (testicles) is ideal place with warm climate for the fungus to grow. Fungal infection can be of Jock itch causing severe irritation in and around the scrotum and inner thighs. One could not resist the temptation of scratching these areas due to itching. Yeast can also cause infection on testicles. Sexual transmission of micro-organism can occur from affected partner. Similarly secondary infection from bacteria can occur due to moist humid climate on the scrotum.
- Dermatitis :
Rash and intense itch can develop on the scrotal bag and surrounding areas due to contact dermatitis. Some men may develop itching after using new fragrances or dyes in which the allergic materials or irritant is in direct contact with the skin. Avoid using intense perfumes and scents on this area.
- Crabs :
Crabs are parasites (micro-organism) that dwell on the hair of the scrotum or testicles. They are also called as pubic lice causing intense itching. These insects bite the skin causing persistent itching and pain. Pubic lice can be contracted through sex and sharing of towels and bedding with infected person.
- Scabies :
Scabies are itch mite that causes severe rash on the skin folds of the testicles. They are micro insects biting and feeding on the blood of the genital organs. Unknowingly the person would spread these insects by finger nails to other parts of the body.
- Skin Problem :
Since testicles are nothing but small skin bags it is subjected to various skin problems like psoriasis. It can cause red bumps on the testicles and penis. For some men it can be seen as red patches on this region causing severe itching.
- Tight Garments :
Using tight or ill fitting under-garments can also worsen itching. Avoid synthetic clothing and choose cotton garments.

No tests are needed to identify itchy testicles since it is self evident.
Treatment :
You should identify the cause before treating the itching. For bacterial/fungal infection using antibiotic cream can reduce itching. Over the counter ointment can be applied on the testicles during night. Always wash the private parts thoroughly after using toilet and dry them before wearing clothes. Keeping the area dry and clean is the ideal way to prevent growth of bacteria or fungus. You can always try home remedies to manage itchy testicles before visiting your physician. Apply few drops of tea tree oil on the area to manage itching. It is a powerful antifungal agent cleansing the parasites within a day or two. Add few drops of this oil on a cotton ball and rub it gently on your scrotum. By repeating this simple remedy for a week you can see considerable difference in itching.
Vinegar is another naturally occurring antifungal agent. You can cleanse the area using few drops of apple cider vinegar for getting good result. You can also add few drops of vinegar while bathing. Pure coconut oil is an excellent remedy for controlling itching. Apply few drops of coconut oil on the area and leave it overnight. Avoid changing perfumes and soaps often and use mild fragrances for your skin. If nothing gives the expected result, you can consult a dermatologist.
