Melasma is also called mask of pregnancy which appears in the form of skin discoloration during the reproductive years of women. You can observe change of color in the forehead, cheeks, face and chin of women who are pregnant or using contraceptive pills. Very rarely it occurs in males. Some people relate melasma to exposure of sun.
Melasma Causes :
Exact cause is not known. But it is believed that dark patches or skin discoloration is caused by pregnancy or hormonal changes. Women who use contraceptive pills or undergo hormone therapy or having a family history of melasma have high risk of getting melasma. Exposure to sun will certainly discolor the skin and it is peak during summer season. During winter months, the pigment causing color change is less functional. Some doctors relate melasma to estrogen and progesterone hormone changes. Typically dry patches are seen in nose, cheeks, face and lips.
Melasma Symptoms :
Melasma do not have any specific symptoms other than skin discoloration in certain areas. The color may change to dark brown or red depending on the complexion of the person.
Diagnoses :
Your doctor will look for color discoloration and other skin changes on your body. If needed, he may perform skin biopsy for confirming the disease.

Melasma Treatment :
- Common treatment for melasma is using over the counter topical ointments that contain hydroquinone. Creams containing tretinoin or azelaic acid can also be used for treating melasma.
- Apply sunscreen lotion on the affected parts while going out in the hot sun.
- In severe cases, your doctor may use laser therapy for clearing the dark pigments. Actually, laser therapy is not effective for melasma and it can bring only temporary relief.
